‘Helping young people’ – Chorley and South Ribble & Greater Preston (CSR&GP) CCGs


The client

Chorley and South Ribble CCG and Greater Preston CCG are two Clinical Commissioning Groups in Lancashire, which frequently work together to improve outcomes for patients in the county.


The challenge

Chorley and South Ribble and Greater Preston CCGs were looking to implement the Children and Young People’s Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health Transformation Plan (CYPTP) for Lancashire (2015-2020).

Through the Plan, the two CCGs were aiming to:

  • improve the resilience, emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people, making it easier for them and their families to access support when they need it

  • improve the standard of mental health services across Lancashire, especially by preventing mental ill-health through early intervention, care and recovery.

How we helped

NHS Chorley and South Ribble and Greater Preston CCGs commissioned Big White Wall (BWW) in February 2016, as a key partner in the CYPTP. Since then, BWW has provided a much-needed, suitable and timely service for the over-16 age group.

BWW offers Step 1 provision for young people aged 16-25, including a moderated and anonymous online community, creative outlets, clinically-led programmes and self-help materials. Young people can access the service via self-referral or via referral from their college, university, GP, IAPT, CAMHS or other local service. BWW also provides Step 3 one-to-one therapy online, giving greater choice to young people who struggle to attend face-face appointments.


From 1 January 2015 until 1 February 2018, 792 young people aged 16-25 used BWW services.

In a recent survey, 100% of these young people said that their wellbeing had improved, most commonly through ‘feeling more confident’, ‘feeling less isolated’ and ‘having improved coping skills.’ Of those who had visited a GP because of their mental health, 50% said that they did so less as a result of BWW. Similarly, 80% of those who had visited A&E did so less frequently. Of those who were in work, meanwhile, 100% said that BWW helped them take less time off, and to be more productive.
